How TO Prepare

Getting Ready for Picture Day

Having worked in early childhood education centres for the last 6 years offering picture day, I'd like to share with you some tips, tricks, and ideas on how to prepare your kiddos for their moment in the spotlight. On this page you'll find everything from how to coach them on what to expect, ideas on what to wear, and tips on how to soothe those camera jitters. If you have any questions or would like to chat, please email me at info@krystinamariephotography.com.

Say "Cheese"....

A range of expressions will be captured that day, because I find that your child's true personality will shine in those "in-between" moments. At home, you can try practicing with your phone camera and getting your child to say things like "cheese" or asking them to show you their big smile. Having practiced a few times helps make them more comfortable at picture day and more likely to smile.

Avoid Joining In

If drop off is an anxious time for your child, I find combining drop off with staying to watch your child participate in picture day can make for a very unpleasant experience for them. Being able to participate in picture day with their friends once they've settled in for the morning helps provides peer support and makes for a positive experience. If your child knows that you will be leaving right after they are photographed, it's very unlikely that they will want to participate.

Siblings

Having a big sibling at the centre is a huge support for calming those picture day jitters. I always recommend to the centre's staff to bring them together, that way your little's confidence is built by watching your bigs go first. It's also a great time to get a few shots of them together.

Bright Lights

I use studio lighting, which can be bright when the strobe goes off. If your child has sensitivities to lights, please let the centre's staff know so I can photograph them with an alternative method.

What to Wear and what to avoid

Choose Complimentary Colours

Choose Complimentary Colours

A sample of the background will be provided to the centre. Try and chose colours that compliment the colours in the background by choosing colours on the opposite side of the circle.

Prints or Patterns

Prints or Patterns

Patterns are fantastic complimented with a matching colour. Try to avoid mixing patterns. Prints such as licensed characters or words may become creased, distorted, or illegible. Sometimes putting a shirt on backwards can be fun, silly and look great.

-

Shoes

Shoes

This isn't your typical public school picture day. Instead of just the shoulders up approach, many photos will be taken, some of which will include your child's feet. Consider sending along an extra pair of shoes, or consider opting for wiggling toes.
