What makes for a good photo in visual advertising?
It depends on many factors. From the industry in which you work or if you'd like an indoor or outdoor photo. My goal is to give you the best image possible for your crew. Over the last 7 years photographing for the Valley Faces of Business, I've noticed a few things that can make or break and image. Listed here are some things to consider when booking your photo.
- Are you a trade or do you work on a farm? Do you work outside? You're probably going to want to set a time first thing in the morning. This way everyone is nice and clean and it's less disrupting of your schedules. During the summer months, mid day is one of the most challenging times to photograph. It leaves harsh shadows which doesn't make for a good image. If you want to include the outdoors, early mornings and evenings (the blue hour) will give you a great shot.
- Do you work in an office or bank? You've got a lot of flexibility here in terms of lighting, as I have studio lighting equipment. If you have the option of indoors, I typically take it, as it's easier to control the light and you'll get a much more professional image. It will take some time to pose everyone, so I recommend setting a time in the mornings before opening. That way, you'll be able to great a well crafted image and be able to focus on your clients.
- What to wear? If you have branded shirts, bring them out! Otherwise when coordinating with your group, try and avoid patterns, logos, clothing with words, or pictures. Stick to solid colours within a similar colour tone or group. I'll be able to arrange everyone in a pattern that compliments the colours present. T-shirts work for casual environments, long sleeves are preferable for offices. Unless you're wearing scrubs!
- Do you have a small space? In order for everyone to look comfortable, if you have a small space, try to limit the number of people in the photo. Have a large number of staff in a small space can make everyone look uncomfortable.
- Avoid including your signage in the photo. Through the graphic design process we'll add your logos, fonts, and contact information, so there's no need to stand by your sign.
- Are you hoping to include a vehicle in your image? If your decision to include a vehicle is based around it having your logos and branding, I would typically advise against it. It can work for small groups of 3-5, however it can become lost in larger groups. I would recommend industry specify "props". Think folders, tools, equipment.
- Does everyone want to participate? Not everyone enjoys having their photo taken. You'll get a great photo with a handful of folks that want to be in it, vs a group that is camera shy. Give your folks the option.
